Catching Up On Great Comments

Thanks for the well-wishes as I still wage my war against this crummy flu. In between sniffles I've been able to catch up on some great comments that have been left over the weekend. Especially the my post on why expired auctions are OK and how they shouldn't get you down.

I appreciate and will respond to all comments. It's also a good source of new topics. So feel free to jump into the conversation or plant a seed for a topic you'd like to see.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go back to feeling sorry for myself and being excessively whiney to Mrs. Og.

Hi Og,

I have a question (or maybe an upcoming blog topic) regarding your strategy with patches. I use Auctioneer advanced not sure if I should erase the database data and start new a week or so after the patch or stick with high-volume items until the market adjusts with the patch updates.

This is a great blog and I have learned tons from it. Thanks!

Bri - Nice. Still resisted but I'm on the upswing.

ShelaghG - It was definitely a Man Cold. Mrs. Og has been a trooper and is definitely destined for Sainthood.

Morgs - Auctioneer Advance takes care of getting rid of old data regularly (not like Classic that required you to do it yourself). So you shouldn't have to do anything different.

Anything that's market affecting from a patch (like extending max auction times) takes a few weeks to shake out. You're perception will serve you better over the short-term and AA will work itself out over the long-run.

Og, Ive been doing pretty well on AH, inspired by your blog. Im doing well on weapons and trade goods; even getting timing down on shard markets. AH'ing once a day Im making over 100g a week. Thing is my stake is getting pretty good now, so Im thinking about moving into bigger markets, but what?

In particular, do you ever try and corner a market, boosting sure sells like primals up two gold per and bringing it in that way? What are some criteria for getting into cornering? Way back when I got killed in arcanite rods trying to corner. But primals and netherweave seem better bets.

Hey Og, get well soon!

Some general thoughts today:

What puzzles me most is when I meet people that are constantly out of gold or that are asking for some spare coin so they can repair ... their level 70 epics!

I find the AH a fascinatiing mirror of today's world. 5 of an item for 9 gbo? Well, then I can still sell one for 1.99 gbo - people don't calculate how to save money.

Been practising the dark art of flipping purples and blues lately. I wonder: when do you decide that an item isn't worth being put up again and again? After two weeks? How much do you fluctuate the price?

Robur, the question of how long to leave a blue on the AH has been bothering me too. I've been playing with this for a couple weeks now and I'm starting to accumulate blues that it just seems no one wants, or that are common enough that someone always comes along to undercut me. I've managed to unload everything, but some of it's been at a small loss. And I'm beginning to think that those Nagascale leggings of Spirit were a bad investment. Who uses spirit anyway? :(

On a side note, somebody's Auctioneer spoofing on my server. They're putting up a single stack of various trade goods for many times what they're actually worth just to throw everyone's Auctioneer off. I think most of us are savvy enough to detect this ploy, but keep an eye out.

how many of you do much with greens? i havent messedwith them much cause they can be flooded at times and easy to loot. but am i leaving money on the table that i could be collecting?

Anonymous said...

I have only been looking at higher level greens for disenchanting purposes only. When I started I was messing around with some greens and it was just too much work for my taste, although I imagine there is value if you know the 'most wanted' items. I mainly focus on rare weapons/armor, trade goods, and some consumables. I have done some Epic items, but get gun-shy on those sometimes! Up to 2k gold in 3 weeks!

Thomas said...

I've neared the 2k mark myself now in 3 weeks of trading but I'm noticing a slowdown. The bursts of money just isn't like what it used to be. Probably 75% of my gold is tied up in purples and blues and the rest are in consumables and greens. I find each day that I tend to have to repost about 90% or so of my auctions. I'll have to sit and actually figure that out to get true numbers - it just feels like 90%.

I'm thinking too that it could be because Silver Hand is one of the oldest servers around its more established and people know what an items value should be. Occassionally I find the great deal that nets me 50-100 gold or so, but my bread and butter seems to be the consumables like metals, herbs, etc. However those don't move often enough to net me the big bucks.

I was hoping to hit 5k by the end of the month to get my epic flying mount, but I'm pushing that date back another 30 days. Maybe too I'm in a slow period with 2.4 ramping up on the PTRs people may be getting ready for that.

Here's a topic I'd love to see touched - how to play the AH when a content patch/expansion is going to be released. I.e. prior to TBC I know ores were starting to get hoarded for Jewelcrafting. How would one speculate in that kind of market?

Og, are you ok? You haven't posted in a while, and I, for one, am getting worried!

Shall I send Daxenos over for a heal/abolish disease?

Wishing good health in your specific direction!

While Og is out sick I'll throw a quick bone to all those jonsing for their AH fix.

Darkmoon Faire is in town - 2nd week going which is a first. For the last couple of months I've sent a character to the Faire and "camped" out by the two unique items vendors, the Professor and Llahra. What makes them unique is that they sell items that respawn about every five minutes and are individual buys. They both sell an assortment of blue uncut gems, potions, scrolls, herbs, green (and the occassional blue) items, leather, and other items. Gems sell for 12 gold each and a quick check with your local AH should show that you'll get a decent return on most of them. I know I spent 48 gold on 4 gems, sold one for over 48 gold, thus making a profit on the remaining three. Scrolls for me are where I see the biggest return. A scroll that I buy for 1 silver can sell for nearly 20 on the AH. That's a 2000% return! Granted, I won't get my epic flying mount by reselling scrolls, but its good income.

Typically I save the herbs and pots for my alts but I do sell some - leathers as well. This month I sent my human rogue 500 gold to spend at the DMF - so far he's spent nearly half that. I tend to camp the Faire an hour a day, sometimes more if I'm surfing online (alt-tab out), sometimes less if there's already a crowd. I don't fight for space...if there's more than a couple people camping out as well I'll just go on another character. Better things to do than try to fight for a scroll or potion.

My favorite DMF setting would be Mulgore. While its a pain for Alliance to get out there, on my server there's a 2.5:1 Alliance to Horde ratio. That means camping DMF out in Horde lands results in little competition. Goldshire would be my next favorite setting - usually mornings and weekday nights are good. Weekends get busier the later into the day we get and as I'm in SoCal if its past noon, its too late. My least favorite would be Shat City. You'd think only the 60-70 crowd would be there but with friendly mages giving portals to every Tom, Dick, and level One out there, its often busier than IF in its heyday. Hard to get any good camping going on.

Its well worth the time to spend camping the DMF - Fel Lotuses are sold for 2 gold each. If you don't have an alchemist you can easily resell these jewels...on my AH they go for 30 gold apiece. Usually I can get 1-3 Fel Lotus a day from the Faire. Considering I spend about 4-5 hours weekly on my herbalist farming and only get 1 or 2, this is a better use of time buying the herbs!

Og, get better!

Since Og is still AFK, figured I throw in another quickie:

Primal Nethers in 2.4 become BoE as do Nether Vortexes. Vortices also become purchasable for 15 badges and 8 gold. Primals are already worth 10 badges so I must ask...what do people think the general AH pricing will be for both Nethers? Naturally the more mature a server is the more Nethers have been made available, but I don't think it would necessarily mean more Nethers will be dumped on the market. Considering there are more and more patterns that drop requiring these Nethers as guilds progress further and further up into the Tiered content I would have to say within the first week you may see dozens to hundreds of Nethers on the AH. Personally I forsee pricing from anywhere starting around 25 gold to 500 gold, probably settling around the 30-50 gold mark.

On a related note as time passes there will be a couple new vendors offering purple gems. On some servers (mine included) the AH has already seen some of these uncut gems appearing. Pricing on SH has been in the hundreds (200-400 or so) for each gem. I'm wondering where the pricing will be for these when the patch hits. I think more people will take advantage of the epic gems, especially since they'll no longer be unique, thus keeping the pricing rather high.

So...what does everyone else think?

I've been quite surprised by the way Primal Nethers and Nether Vortex have sold on the auctionhouse on my server (Blackrock). Nethers seem to have settled into a buyout price of about 35 gold, while the Vortex seem settled on about 220 gold.

Given the number of badges to get them isn't hugely different, i wonder why there is such a price discrepancy - is it a result of people running large numbers of heroics, but few SSC. I must admit i'm also quite surprised that the Primal Nether are going as cheap as they are. Given the recent spike in prices for the leg armor kits which require them, this might be a good area for investment.

Anonymous said...

I think the large influx of vortexes from guilds have had something to do with it. Most of the guilds on my server had dozens stocked up with no more use for them, so they resolved to sell them all off.

Has for nethers? I haven't seen any in the past 3 days, but they were 50-70g pre patch. 30-40g sounds about right considering they are easier to get now.

I suspect however, that there will be a rise in the price of nether when the anvil becomes available, people are going to need leg enchants and the market for those and there mats have dried up in the past week.

Stock up on the mats if you can, would probably not be much of a stretch to turn them into a profit later on.

Also:

Does anyone know what happened to Og? Is he just taking a long break or was that case of the sniffles worse than we thought =(

I came back to see if you had returned, Og. It's been a few months and still no word from you after your mysterious disappearance. If you are still checking this and contemplating returning to this project, please do. Your ideas and insights are sorely missed :(

I hope you check this and decide to return, but if not, sometimes good things come to an end to, and we understand :) Thank you for the awesome run.

Please come back Og!
You have no idea how much money i have made just by little suggestions you have made.
Here I was, a Tankadin with 1300g dreaming of an Epic Flyer (a Roflecopter of course)
Now i have 4300g! Logging on to my Shaman (bank alt, was my druid but hes being levelled now) is always fun when theres a little surprise waiting for you in the mailbox. Playing the AH has really opened up a whole other aspect of the game, finding the right items, seeing if they sell, knowing what twink items are good and what so.

So i say, Thanks Og and please return!

Just found this blog in searching material. This is a great source of information, too bad it's abandoned.

I will incorporate the information found here into my business-blog, the Greedy Goblin. http://greedygoblin.blogspot.com/

Og, it's unlikely you will read this but thanks for this site.
